Comprehensive Standard 3.8.3: Qualified Staff
The institution provides a sufficient number of qualified staff – with appropriate education or experiences in library and/or other learning/information resources – to accomplish the mission of the institution.
The University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee (USF Sarasota-Manatee) employs a Director of the Information Commons/Assistant Librarian, a Library Specialist, and other qualified staff within the Information Commons. Both the Librarian and Library Specialist hold master’s degrees in library science from American Library Association-accredited institutions and possess the qualifications and relevant experience commensurate with their responsibilities (see qualification table below). These two Library/Information Commons staff members work from offices in the Information Commons at USF Sarasota-Manatee and from an office at the Jane Bancroft Cook Library located on the New College of Florida (NCF) campus, approximately one-half mile from USF Sarasota-Manatee. The Librarian also travels periodically to the North Port instructional site to instruct faculty and students in library services. Additionally, USF Sarasota-Manatee students and faculty benefit from the expertise and services provided by six (6) librarians, all with master’s degrees in library science, and eleven (11) paraprofessional staff members at the Cook Library employed by NCF.
For professional development, USF Sarasota-Manatee encourages and financially supports the Librarian to participate in workshops, seminars, and professional conferences throughout the year. The national association, the American Library Association, provides many opportunities for professional service and training. One division specifically, the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL), created special institutes designed to develop librarians as researchers and teachers. The Librarian participated in ACRL’s 2008 Immersion Institute to learn how to teach and assess student information literacy skills. In 2012 the Librarian published a book with IGI-Global on Remote Access to library services and is editing another book scheduled to be published by IGI-Global in 2016 on mobile technology and library resources. In addition, the Librarian at USF Sarasota-Manatee is Chair (Diane Fulkerson) of the ACRL Women and Gender Studies Section. She also served as a member of a ACRL Task Force to revise ACRL’s information literacy standards for higher education. The Librarian also participated in the Quality Matters rubric training course and serves as a member of the campus professional development committee.
Senior librarians at USF Tampa collaborate with the USF Sarasota-Manatee Library/Information Commons staff on an ongoing basis. This collaboration, both formal and informal, provides support for publishing and presenting research, designing instruction sessions, and learning collection development techniques and strategies
The E-Learning Services team and the Learning Support Services team works closely with the Librarian to provide other information/learning resources. The Assistant Director of E-Learning Services holds a Master of Science in Information Technology in Education. Reporting to her are the Instructional Media Technologist and the Instructional Technologist/Multimedia Developer. In order to remain current with rapidly changing technology and effective practice in online pedagogy, staff members engage in continuous professional development. Professional development activities include Quality Matters certifications, participation in annual professional conferences, webinars, collaborative meetings with other USF System Online Learning teams, and self-directed skill development and learning (e.g., via the Atomic Learning system of tutorials). The Faculty Coordinator for Learning Support Services holds a Ph.D. in English and oversees the tutoring center adjacent to the Information Commons. She has fifteen (15) years experience teaching college English and six (6) years experience in overseeing learning support.
