Comprehensive Standard 3.4.5: Academic Policies
The institution publishes academic polices that adhere to principles of good educational practice. These are disseminated to students, faculty, and other interested parties through publications that accurately represent the programs and services of the institution.
The University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee (USF Sarasota-Manatee) follows academic policies consistent with principles of good educational practice. The General Counsel’s Webpage and the Registrar’s Webpage post USF System policies and regulations regarding academics to which USF Sarasota-Manatee adheres. The academic policies also appear in USF Sarasota-Manatee’s Academic Catalog (Policies and Regulations), which is published on the Catalogs Webpage. It includes Undergraduate Policies and Graduate Policies. Each college also publishes its own Rules & Requirements for admission, graduation, and other academic areas in the Academic Catalog: Arts & Sciences Rules & Requirements; Business Rules & Requirements; Education Rules & Requirements; and Hospitality & Tourism Leadership (previously Hospitality & Technology Leadership) Rules & Requirements.
USF Sarasota-Manatee’s Student Engagement office is responsible for the upkeep and publishing of the Student Handbook on its Student Engagement Webpage. Student Engagement emphasizes each of these important documents at the various new student Orientations: Freshman Orientation, Transfer Orientation, Graduate Orientation, and International Orientation.
Academic Affairs is responsible for the publication of the online Academic Catalog. The appropriate units (e.g., colleges) review and update the catalogs annually. Academic Affairs publishes them on-line for easy accessibility from the Academics Homepage of the USF Sarasota-Manatee website. As the official Academic Affairs document for USF Sarasota-Manatee, it includes criteria for admission, registration, graduation, academic regulations, majors, and course descriptions. The catalogs also contain information on academic grievance procedures, academic integrity, and other related topics. Academic Affairs also publishes and maintains the Faculty & Staff Handbook, along with an Administrative Procedures and Resources Webpage with forms and documents.
In the development of academic policies, USF Sarasota-Manatee follows USF System Policy 0-001. The USF System President delegated authority on June 15, 2009, to the Regional Chancellor of USF Sarasota-Manatee for the creation and promulgation of academic policies and procedures (Memorandum of Delegation). In addition to the administrative offices who handle the process of policy creation and approval, academic policies are reviewed by the appropriate faculty groups, including the Academic Programs Committee (APC) and the Faculty Senate.
The Regional Vice Chancellor for Academic & Student Affairs ensures that all of USF Sarasota-Manatee’s academic policies and procedures comply with the regulations of the Board of Governors (BOG), that all USF Sarasota-Manatee academic policies are consistent with the recommendations of SACSCOC and other accrediting bodies, and that all regulations reflect best practices advocated by national higher education associations. When appropriate, the General Counsel’s office is consulted in the drafting of policies to ensure respect for due process.
Information on the dissemination of University policies is also provided in Federal Regulation 4.3 (Publication of Policies).
