Southern Association of Colleges and Schools

SACSCOC is the private, non-governmental organization that accredits educational institutions in the southern states of the United States (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia). The Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACSCOC) is recognized by the United States Department of Education.

Purpose of Accreditation

Accreditation is a voluntary process. According to SACSCOC, “the process stimulates evaluation and improvement, while providing a means of continuing accountability to constituents and the public,” and “the product of accreditation is a public statement of an institution’s continuing capacity to provide effective programs and services based on agreed-upon requirements” (Principles of Accreditation). Institutions seeking accreditation undergo an intensive self-review process in which they assess how well they are meeting their educational missions, goals, and expected outcomes, making improvements as needed (See USF Sarasota-Manatee’s Mission, Vision, Values, and Goals Statement in the USF Sarasota-Manatee Strategic Plan: Focus on Quality 2020). USF Sarasota-Manatee is committed to upholding the highest standards of teaching, research, and service, and reaffirming our accreditation will show the world the strength of our students, faculty, and staff.

SACSCOC Visit Teams

Dr. Michael Hoefer, SACSCOC Vice President and the Commission’s Liaison to USF Sarasota-Manatee, conducted an advisory visit with us on July 22-23, 2015.

From September to November, 2015, our materials were reviewed by the Off-site Reaffirmation Committee members who provided the Off-site Reaffirmation Committee Report – Nov 2015.

USF Sarasota-Manatee welcomed the members of our on-site SACSCOC Visit Committee to campus on March 8-10, 2016 ( Photos). They reviewed our Focused Report, QEP, and 24 Standards that the Federal government requires be reviewed during the site visit. For their schedule over the four days, follow this link:  Updated: Final Schedule.

Following the visit, the Committee prepared its Reaffirmation Report with just one recommendation regarding adding descriptors to the QEP’s Incredi-Bull Critical Thinking rubric for scores of 1, 2, and 4. The faculty had already provided descriptors for a score of 3. The Response Report from USF Sarasota-Manatee to the one recommendation is due to SACSCOC by September 9, 2016. After review, an announcement of USFSM’s continued accreditation is anticipated on December 6, 2016.
